Embracing a Culture of Learning for New Mexico’s Future
A learning organization is one that embraces the ongoing journey of acquiring and sharing knowledge in the pursuit of continuous improvement, adaptability, and innovation. This journey must be championed by an organization’s leadership and intentionally nurtured at every level.
At the New Mexico Foundation, I envision our organization as a dynamic learning institution—one that listens deeply, adapts thoughtfully, and contributes meaningfully to the collective advancement of our state.
Over the past two months, I have had the privilege of learning from individuals and organizations working across New Mexico. Through the commitment and passion of nonprofits, community coalitions, grassroots groups, and dedicated individuals, I see how our shared values and efforts reinforce our vital social contract—grounded in the belief that a rising tide lifts all boats.
Alongside these inspiring efforts, I’ve also heard many expressions of concern—honest reflections from New Mexicans about the very real challenges facing our communities. These concerns are often shaped by national policies, economic trends, and political dynamics, but they are felt most directly at the local level. As a learning organization, we have a responsibility to hear both the aspirations and the anxieties of our fellow New Mexicans.
Some of the pressing concerns I’ve encountered recently include:
* Deteriorating healthcare infrastructure in rural areas, including facility closures, loss of providers, and long travel distances to access care
* Aging populations in rural communities, creating long-term demographic and care challenges
* A lack of opportunities that foster healthy development for youth—mentally, socially, and emotionally
* The need for a robust “prenatal to college” pipeline as a long-term investment in human potential
* Growing concerns around water scarcity, climate change, and aging infrastructure
* The threat of Medicaid and SNAP cuts and their disproportionate impact on New Mexico families
* Immigration concerns centering around public safety, human rights, and the impact of federal immigration policies on local communities
These are just a few of the complex issues that were brought to our attention. Naturally, the question that follows is: How can the New Mexico Foundation help?
One of the most fundamental ways we can add value is by providing flexible financial resources—funding that sparks ideas, buys time, and activates solutions not always covered by public funding. Through the generosity of donors, we can operate in creative spaces between and beyond government programs. This is often where innovation and meaningful transformation begin.
However, it’s no secret that New Mexico ranks near the bottom nationally in philanthropic giving—from individuals, families, and corporations. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity.
That’s where community foundations like ours play a vital role. We serve as trusted vehicles for donors to invest in causes they care about—whether local or statewide. We also connect donors to the work happening on the ground, led by organizations and experts who understand the issues deeply and are crafting real solutions.
As the New Mexico Foundation continues to grow, we remain committed to being a learning organization—one that listens with empathy, acts with intention, and partners for impact. Together, we can create a stronger, more resilient New Mexico for all.
We are living in tumultuous times. The challenges we face—both locally and globally—require us to lean into the curves with courage, clarity, and a shared commitment to the values that define us as New Mexicans. Now more than ever, we must look after one another, care for our neighbors, and ensure that those with the greatest needs are not left behind.
At the New Mexico Foundation, we’ve been hard at work refreshing and strengthening our internal systems to provide more accurate, timely, and responsive service to all of our partners. These efforts reflect our deep commitment to stewardship, transparency, and the long-term impact of our shared work.
I am both humbled and inspired as I’ve had the privilege of connecting with many of our community partners (grantees) and funding partners alike, learning about the remarkable work happening across our state. From rural communities to urban neighborhoods, I see people and organizations doing the hard work of transforming lives and strengthening communities.
As we move forward, the New Mexico Foundation is committed to being a strong, dependable, and collaborative partner. We look forward to walking this journey together toward a more equitable and prosperous future for all New Mexicans.
With gratitude and hope,
