The 2021 Jonathan Sherman Spradling Memorial Scholarship application is now closed.
The Jonathan Sherman Spradling Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Jonathan Spradling (June 2, 1978 – October 12, 2001), a native New Mexican who graduated from Artesia High School. He was a good student as well as student council leader and president. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards. He played on the state championship Bulldog football team and loved education, music, art, reading and writing.
Jonathan was just 23 at the time of his accident. At the University of New Mexico, he was a senior studying English and History. His plan was to become a classroom teacher. Jonathan was a gifted young man who was very close to his family and always ready to lend a hand to someone in need. At UNM, he enjoyed his continued writings, as well as his literature, art, and history classes. His interests ranged from World War II to Buddhism to fine art to the finest cheap burrito. He was most happy camping in the Jemez Mountains or on the shores of Elephant Butte and snowboarding in New Mexico’s beautiful mountains. Jonathan was drawn to politics and worked with his party for two years as a press secretary and campaign coordinator. Throughout his lifetime, Jonathan was involved with people and community service, and he easily made friends everywhere.
Several scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors from the following high schools: Belen High School, Los Lunas High School, and Valencia High School. Applicants must have a 2.0 minimum, cumulative high school GPA and plan to attend a post-secondary institution in New Mexico beginning fall 2021. Applicants must also have a record of doing community service.
