Acts of Love – Loaves and Fishes

E Newsletter Loaves and Fishes

Loaves and Fishes Community Development Corporation, serving the Chaves County communities of Dexter, Hagerman, and Lake Arthur, believes that sharing the basic needs of life is an act of love. And, in their eyes, healthy communities can only be achieved when all of its citizens have access to basic needs including clothing, shelter, education, employment, and a sound spiritual foundation. In 2025, Loaves and Fishes shared the love with over 2,500 individuals at their community food pantry.

Called neighbors, Loaves & Fishes clients receive supplemental groceries once a month from the food pantry building located in Hagerman. But, what’s special about their food pantry is that they operate more like a grocery store by allowing neighbors to push a grocery cart through the aisles and choose their groceries. Also during their visit, “neighbors have an opportunity to choose from donations of gently used clothing, small housewares, books and toys,” said volunteer program director LeeAnn Sandoval.

As part of the NMCF Sustaining New Mexico Fund, Loaves & Fishes received a $3,000 grant to support their efforts in 2025. Together, with many partner organizations and over 25 local volunteers, they share the basics of love in their community.
